Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
Child Safety Products A..to..Z Guide
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is the leading cause of death among infants who are 1 month to 1 year old, claiming about 2,500 infants each year in the United States.
What is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome SIDS ?
SIDS occurs during sleep, without warning, to infants who appear healthy . It is the most terrifying, confusing and upsetting thing that may take place with a newborn baby. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is defined as when a baby dies in the first year of life from no apparent reason. The reasons still are not wholly identified, but in SIDS deaths, the baby recovery mechanisms (if deprived of oxygen) are not developed and he is not able to rouse himself if his breathing becomes blocked, such as when he is sleeping with face down.
There is no technique to predict whether a baby is at risk for SIDS, even though the rate of SIDS deaths has decreased in the last ten years. Creating a safe sleep environment for the baby is one way to help avoid SIDS.
For the first year of life, babies should be put to sleep on their backs. If put to sleep on their sides, they have to be positioned with one arm ahead to prevent them from rolling over on their stomachs. Soft foam wedges can be purchased for just this purpose.
Stay away from slack, fluffy bedding and make sure your baby’s face is not blocked. Be cautious not to overheat your baby by over covering him or dressing him in too many layers.
Do not smoke and do not allow anyone else to smoke near the baby. be sure he has a firm mattress in a safety approved crib.
There are supervising devices that can alert you if the baby ceased breathing.
There are some early indications you may want to consider and pay attention to :If the baby has had any life threatening episodes, like turning blue, or an event demanding mouth to mouth resuscitation.
If the baby had older siblings who died of SIDS.
Sudden infant death syndrome is more common in premature infants, those who were tiny at birth, and those with upper respiratory tract infections.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is rare in breast fed infants.
